  1. Pia Sundhage is a better coach than Greg Ryan or even April Heinrichs.

Why? Even when the U.S. lost to Norway in their first Olympic match, Pia didn’t panic and pushed all the right buttons.

  2. Julie Foudy’s calm assessment proved to be on total target, stretching all the way through the Olympics! Congrats, Julie, for such an exceptional set of remarks…

  3. So what is Greg Ryan doing now? Since her was fired after the consequences of this awful and close to bizarre decision?

  4. Hope Solo is a great goalie.

The comments for which most of the team ostracised her were less criticism of Curry than confidence that she would have made the saves that, on that day and with no game time, Curry couldn’t.

Those weren’t the remarks of an egotist, only a competitor. Well, in the Olympics Brazil watched her make 8 outstanding saves, one on one, against their greatest players. The US won the Gold. Greg Ryan wasn’t wearing the coach’s hat. Sometimes, life is fair.

  5. i think its funny that he said that the confidance doesn’t matter how can anybody win anything no matter how big the game is if they didnt’ have confidence??

  6. Solo got exactly what she deserved. They are a team. They succeed together and they fail together. Solo should have been kicked off the team after her comments.

I find it ironic that her name is Solo. Not really cut out for a team sport I would say.

  7. Yep, and Hope Solo will be the starting GK against Brazil in the Gold Medal game.

No Greg Ryan, no Brianna Scurry, let’s see if Solo can lead the U.S. to a Gold Medal in Beijing.

  8. ha ha okay so her confidence doesn’t matter lets see the past 2 games against brazil that hope played in before the olympics she shut out both games but they didn’t have marta and their other big name players but whatever i’m hoping that hope letting up those 2 goals today is going to end up the same way shutting out the next games (but please pia minus the goalie controversy lol)

  9. I have been a long time supporter of the US team, but I was ashamed and disgusted at how Solo was ostracized after the fact (with the exception of Carli Lloyd who i read was the only player to breack rank & stuck by Solo). They talk about being there for each other, and how they stick together, yet in one of their teammates darkest hour they turn their back on her! that is royally f*cked up, i dont care what Solo said, she did not deserve the kind of treatment she got.

  10. they all make good pts… he shouldnt have started her cold no matter what she looked like in practice… but Hope shouldnt have said what she said about her own teammate! she should encouraging… i like her fine but it just goes to show she will never be the captain…

  11. He brought them in out of shape. Brazil worked that team. No if ands or buts about it.

  12. Fawking briana scurry. Thought it was gonna be a good game? yeah for the fking brazilians. She didnt even make easy saves

  13. Happily, Greg Ryan was immediately fired.

Ryan did his damage to the team BEFORE the game: Greg Ryan is THE definition of an incompetent douchebag, and a poster child for what incompetent douchebags do to teams. Not only did he create massive team disruption by benching Solo (whose 51 game winning streak GOT the team to the World Cup), he played Scurry WHO HADN’T PLAYED IN 3 MONTHS. He destroyed the team BEFORE THEY EVEN GOT ON THE FIELD!

Good riddance to psycho Ryan since his firing.

  14. Fecking stoopid decision. Poor Hope shouldn’t of got as much slack as she did on what she said after the match.

  15. Greg doesn’t know. Solo should have played U.S. would have gone to the Fina. And WNT would be Champs again. =[

  16. I’m a kepper myself n I have to say that it doesn’t matter how good a keeper is in training cause it’s the game decisions that matter the most especially with goalkeeping. When a keeper makes a mistake it shows much more than if a foward were to make a mistake. And it wasn’t that Bri didnt have as much skill as Hope it’s that she lost her sense of decision making after not playing a full game for nearly 2 months. If hope had played, the U.S. would’ve had another shutout…
